Day 3 at the hospital and we are coping. Alphonse was able to sleep last night and that was a blessing as he woke up with a small smile this morning. Not quite the smiles we are used to getting from him, but it’s a start.
His fever disappeared at noon today, and he had some bleeding from the lips and gums, which, thankfully, was stanched with some pressure and ice. I alerted his doctors and they’re watching him more closely today. Our room is a busy hub of doctors and nurses coming and going all day.
Alphonse still roams the halls in the wheelchair. He won’t stay put inside the room. He circles the halls over and over again, groaning and complaining irritably each time the circle ends back at his room.
At lunch, when he was forced back into his room, he had a meltdown. He ripped the covers of his hands again and in the scuffle, he accidentally broke the hospital lunch plates. It took a while to calm him down.
He’s still not eating and this is most unsettling to us. He takes in bits of fruit and some water but nothing else. If his fever is all gone in the next 24 hours, they’ll be checking his blood again. I am already bracing myself for the struggle.
