One Step Forward

15 Sep

… two steps back and we end up right behind where we started out.

It seems our life with autism has always been like this. Just when we thought that progress has been made, something makes us reconsider the costs of moving forward. It has taken more and more of our strength and determination to even ponder on change. Often, the status quo is frightening enough.

This past week has seen a resurgence in unsettling episodes inside our home. Although they are nowhere near the scale of events of recent memory, they have shaken our confidence and increased our worries. As always, we deal with damage control as we look back and analyze the events that led to an escalation of negative behavior.

Was it because of Teacher Mark’s departure in late August?

Is it the newness of Teacher Leonard, the lack of rapport between them as of yet?

Is it anxiety related to the new aquatherapy session?

Or is he sick?

All we do now is question; the answers are late in coming.

I pray that whatever it is that causes Alphonse to bear with worry and fear, it will pass away soon. If you happen by this page and have a few seconds to spare, please whisper a short prayer for Alphonse. He needs it now.

I lift him up to You, my Lord, for healing. Have mercy on us.
